Do You Have To Tag Your Cattle and Deer?

Just because your animal(s) qualify for an exemption, there is nothing stopping you from taking advantage of electronic tags in those animals.

Remember, you must tag all

  • Cattle, when they are moved off farm at any time; or if they stay on farm, by1 July 2015

  • Deer, if they are moved off farm at any time; or if they stay on farm, by 1 March 2016

Cattle Exemptions

  • You do not need to tag animals that you consider too dangerous to tag, provided they are going directly to the works and they have the old AHB tag.A NAIT levy will apply to these animals when they are processed, currently $13 (excluding GST) per animal.

  • If your bobby calves are less than 30 days old they do not need to be registered on NAIT nor do they need a NAIT electronic tag, however, they must have a slaughter tag from the works.

Deer Exemptions

  • You do not need to tag animals that you consider too dangerous to tag, provided they are going directly to the works and they have the old AHB tag.A NAIT levy will apply to these animals when they are processed, currently $13 (excluding GST) per animal.

  • If you have trophy stags that are going to a game estate, safari park or zoo, you do not need a NAIT tag.

  • Fallow deer are exempt from NAIT tagging.
